Build Your New Home On A Budget

Posted By on May 2, 2011

With the gas prices soaring and general cost of living increasing it is in the homebuyer’s best interest to establish a budget and stick to it. After you pick the builder who’s going to build your house, your next thought may be the interior. Not so fast, according to about.com  before you start thinking about the cabinets and the faucets that will be decorating your house, think about the shape of the house and the lot you are building on.

About.com gives a list of 14 things that can help you build on a budget when you build your new dream home.

A few highlights from the list include:

  •   Choose Simple Shapes- Triangles, trapezoids, and other complex shapes are difficult and expensive to build. To save costs, choose square or rectangular floor plans. Avoid cathedral ceilings and complicated roof-lines.
    •    As you look through the builders plans keep this in mind, they usually have several plans to choose from, many of which are square or rectangular floorplans.

  • Reconsider Your Cabinets- Solid wood cabinets are elegant, but there are less expensive ways to give kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices a sleek, designer look. Consider open shelving or stainless steel cabinets with frosted glass doors.
    •    Remember when you are in the selection process of your new home pick the upgrades that you can’t change in the future, like brick or hardi-panel siding. You can always swap out your cabinets in the future.

  •       Build For Energy-Efficiency-Don’t be put off by the high price tags. Energy-efficient heating systems and “Energy-Star” rated appliances may cost more to install, but can save money (and the environment) over time. The most economical house is the one you can afford to live in for many years to come.
    • As you research your builders in the area look for their commitment to energy efficiency building. Remember, these features will start saving you money from the day you move in until the day you move out.
