At Potterhill Homes we love to hearing from our homeowners.  Here is what Leisha Vance, a soon-To-Be Potterhill Net-Zero Energy Homeowner, had to say:

My Home Green Home: Getting Settled in Cincinnati

” Finding the perfect home isn’t easy for most folks, and the task only becomes more difficult when you’re relocating from across the country. It takes a while to figure out neighborhood characteristics and dynamics; questions range from “is the neighborhood safe?” and “how close is it to work?” to “what gyms would be near me?” and “where shall I shop?”

Also, as an environmental advocate with a scientific background, my criteria of what makes a great home might be a bit different than those shared by other homebuyers.

My name is Leisha Vance, and soon I’ll be a cool new owner of a Net-Zero Energy home!

When I made the decision to relocate to Cincinnati for work, I really wanted my days of apartment-living to be over. Growing up with a dad who built homes in Arkansas, I always knew that I wanted to build my own home. Having a degree focused on sustainability, I also knew that I wanted something that was energy efficient and environmentally friendly beyond the standard HVAC systems. So when I heard Potterhill Home’s Net-Zero ad on the radio, I have to admit: I was curious.

I visited the model home in Northside just to check things out; I still had more than 6 months on my current lease, so I really wasn’t in the market for a new home yet. Faith gave me a tour of the model, and I was TOTALLY impressed! I really liked that their homes were contemporary, attractive and customizable. I explored several locations, but I was most partial to the Northside area—the neighborhood is unique, aesthetically pleasing, and has a good amount of greenspace for natural habitats. After discussing more of the fine details with Vicki, I was sold. Once I settled on Potterhill, next came the fun part – the details. I wanted to personalize my home so it would be uniquely “me”, so I chose a classic exterior color with light brown cobblestone trim. I also went for the sturdier, more durable siding, opted for an extra extension and a bay window. After that, there are plans to get my home LEED certified.

Since I have a degree in horticulture, I know a few things about plants. I intend to install a no-mow landscape for my yard using border and raised beds with various hardscape features nestled in. I’m currently researching a few varieties of no-mow grass – say goodbye to that lawnmower! In terms of water conservation, I’ll use rain barrels and maybe install a rain garden to contain runoff water. All the Potterhill options – plus my own personal choices – provided an innovative way to personalize my property and a diverse habitat for wildlife.

The construction progress is incredibly exciting; it’s impressive how quickly things are moving!! The construction foreman and Vicki give me updates every week, but I’m also frequently checking things out on my own. Everyone from Potterhill Homes has been nothing short of wonderful (did I mention Vicki has been a dream to work with?), and they’ve all contributed to a positive and painless homebuilding experience thus far.

My friends and I even had a lot-christening party to celebrate – check out our group photo.

So the countdown is on! The only thing left to do is begin the packing and moving….and start designing the yard…..maybe plan the housewarming….wait – coordinate the utilities….maybe the utilities should come before the housewarming, eh? “
