Tips for Decorating a New Home

Posted By on March 24, 2012

Congratulations on the purchase of your new home.  All the time spent with paperwork and the mortgage financing is now behind you. Now comes the fun part making your new home your own.  Here are some tips for decorating a new home. You will certainly find and follow some advice from outside sources, and other ideas will come directly from your own imagination or what you have been dreaming of for years. This is the opportunity to transform your dreams into reality. To get you started on the right track,  let’s consider some of the tips that might give you some shortcuts, confirm things you have already thought of and also cover some points you may not have thought of.

STARTING OFF WITH THE DON’TS

    • Don’t worry about paint color yet. The tendency might be to pick paint colors first and then the décor but the other way around is easier. Thousands of paint colors are already available or can be mixed.
    • Don’t use short curtains. Your curtains and drapes should touch the floor at least and can actually be a little too long.
    • Don’t hang artwork too high. Paintings and other artwork should be hung at eye level.  Bring attention to the artwork with accent lighting.
    • Don’t choose attractive style over comfort. Take a test sit on furniture. You might fall in love with the way a piece looks only to find later you cannot stand sitting on it.
  • Speaking of furniture, don’t leave it all up against the walls. Pulling furniture out into the open offers a more intimate setting. There is nothing wrong with your guests seeing the back of furniture.

AND NOW THE DO’S

    • Buy the best quality you can afford. You want your furniture to last. Feel the backs of sofas and chairs. If they are not padded and feel hollow, they are probably poorly constructed. Sit in all chairs and sofas before you buy.
    • For curtains and drapes keep in mind that others’ eyes quickly focus on these. Choose your patterns and colors carefully.
    • Area rugs are homier than wall-to-wall generally. Just make sure the rug is not too small. Eight to 24” from all walls is average.
    • Do find your key pieces first and then build your decorating around them.
