Happy Earth Day! Use these 10 tips to live a greener life…

Posted By on April 22, 2009

1.  Clean the lint out of your dryer after every use, and change the dryer vent at least every 3 years.  Your clothes dryer will run more efficiently and also be safer because you’ve removed the potentially flammable lint.

2.  Change your furnace filter every 1-3 months. You’ll have cleaner indoor air quality and your HVAC system will run more efficiently.  For even cleaner indoor air, choose an air filter that has a “MERV 10” or higher rating on it.  The higher the MERV rating (1-16 range), the more particulate matter your filter will remove from the air, thereby reducing the dust particles in your home.

3.  Unplug small appliances when not in use (cell phone chargers, toasters, hair dryers). These appliances continue to use power when plugged in even if they are turned off.  By unplugging them you’re saving energy and putting more $$ in your pocket.

4.  Get a water filter & stop buying as many store-bought water bottles.  It’s better for your pocket book as well as the environment.

5. Get a recycling bin and use it.

6.  Change out the light bulbs in your home to EnergyStar rated bulbs. They cost a bit more up front, but they last 15x longer than incandescent bulbs, and they can reduce your energy use on lighting by up to 40%.

7.  At the grocery store, look for products in minimal packaging that is recyclable. Buying in bulk & storing what is left over for future use is a great way to cut down on packaging.

8.  Get some reusable grocery bags and use them.  You don’t necessarily have to buy these shopping bags. If you’re like me, you could collect a closet full of reusable bags at trade-shows and other expo’s.

9.  Buy organic, pesticide-free produce.  It’s healthier for you and the environment.

10.  Don’t take a receipt from the ATM machine.  Those receipts are the source of too much litter. Americans alone take 8 billion of them every year.

You don’t have to make life-altering changes to live a more eco-friendly life. These small things will truly add up to help reduce energy consumption and make our planet a little bit better.
