Professional Decorating Tips

Ever wonder how some people can make their homes feel professionally decorated and customized? If you are building a new home & have the opportunity to make décor and options selections, it is easy to make your new home feel just like you want it. Just follow these tips.

  • - First, figure out what furniture you’re going to keep & what furniture you’re going to buy. Don’t forget to measure your furniture & measure the room you intend for that furniture so you can make sure it fits properly.

  • - Next, start looking through design catalogs and home & garden magazines. Tear out the pages of rooms you would love to have. If you like it, even if you think you can’t afford it, tear it out and keep a stack of all of the design and decorating features you like.

  • - Prior to making color selections for your home, take notice of what elements in the magazine photos you really like. For instance, do you like kitchens with big islands? Do you like staggered cabinet heights in the kitchen? Do you like dark paint colors? Take note of these ideas that seem to speak to your personality & incorporate them into the design of your new home.

  • - When making color selections for your new home, pick design elements that look like the pages you’ve torn out of magazines. For instance, if you have a photo of a dream kitchen that has granite countertops and tile flooring but you can’t afford those upgrade elements, select laminate or FormicaTM countertops to match the color of the granite you love & select a vinyl floor that matches the color of the floor tile in the magazine photo. This will give you the same overall feeling of the designer kitchen for much less money.

  • - Paint is an inexpensive and easy way to make your room feel custom. Wallpaper can be more expensive. If you have a photo of a room that has custom wallpaper, opt for a paint color to match the wallpaper to save money.

  • - Cabinet hardware is an inexpensive way to make a kitchen or bathroom look more professionally decorated. For instant style, choose different cabinet hardware for doors vs. drawers. By using a “knob” shape on doors and a “handle” shape on drawers it will make even the least expensive cabinets look great. Just make sure the color is similar on the doors vs. drawers to avoid a mismatched look…..for instance use a stainless steel finish on both door and drawer cabinet hardware.

  • - When purchasing new furniture, look again to the designs you have selected from magazines. You may be able to mimic the look with slip covers or even bargain finds.

  • - When placing knick-knacks, once again look to your magazines. Notice how bookshelves in the catalogs tend to have similar color/ similar shaped items next to each other on the shelves. Use what you have in other rooms to cluster matching items together.

Bottom line…you don’t have to recreate the wheel! Borrow ideas from design magazines to help your home feel like it has been decorated by a professional.
