Ever wonder how we measure the energy efficiency of our homes?

Posted By on July 21, 2009

Potterhill Homes has a 3rd party verifier certify all homes to make sure we are building our homes to be the most energy efficient and cost efficient possible. Those Energy Certifications provide us with a HERS rating.

A HERS rating is a measure of energy use in a home.  A HERS rating of 100 represents the energy use of a home built to the American Standard Energy Code as revised in 2006.  A HERS rating of 0 indicates that the building purchases no net energy (A Net Zero Energy Building). The lower the rating, the more energy efficient the home.

Potterhill Homes HERS ratings range from 50-85.  It is important to note that the 2006 Energy Code is not a requirement.  Most builders in Greater Cincinnati are not building to meet that code.

New Potterhill Homes built after 2008 exceed the code by 50% or more on heating and cooling use.  And we certify every home to prove it.

You do the math…would you risk buying home with inferior energy efficiency?

Here is a chart of one of Potterhill Homes’ most recent energy certifications.  This particular home earned a 70 HERS score, and it is 50% more efficient on heating & cooling than the 2006 energy code.

About the author

Carolyn Rolfes is the President of Potterhill Homes. And she's also a Rolfes - as in daughter of Dan Rolfes, the infamous Red Tag Man of Holiday Homes. So what does that say about Carolyn and who she is? Plenty. When you grow up the daughter of man who does commercials in his red underwear, you have no choice but to have a great sense of humor and humility from a very young age. Carolyn and Dan founded Potterhill Homes in 2001 and she has grown it to be one of the most successful home builders in Cincinnati. Home building is in her blood and she has a keen awareness of what consumers look for in a new home and how to deliver value at all levels. And while we don't make Carolyn dress up in green underwear for our commercials, we bet she would if we asked!
