Preparing Your Home for Winter

Posted By on November 23, 2013

Preparing your home for WinterIt is time to prepare your home for winter.  Just like switching out your wardrobe you need to take steps to put your home in the best position to withstand the winter.

Step one should be to have your furnace serviced to be certain it is clean and working properly. Be sure the technician also inspects for carbon-monoxide leaks. Being proactive will ensure that you won’t wait in line on the coldest day this winter to have your furnace repaired.

If you have an older thermostat you may want to replace it with a reprogrammable one to help save on heating costs.

Do you have a fireplace? If wood burning have your chimney inspected, if gas or other heating type make certain your vents are clean. This will ensure no chimney fires or carbon monoxide leaking into your home this winter.

Switch directions of your ceiling fans. If your ceiling fans have a reverse switch you should use it to run the fan blades in clockwise direction once you turn on your heat. This will help your heating costs by forcing the hot air down from the ceiling.

This is also a good time to flush your hot water heater to remove sediment, and check to be certain the release valve is working properly. YouTube and are great resources to find tips and videos on how to do this and a million other things.

Now get the exterior of your home ready. Clean you gutters and check all downspouts. You may want to have a home energy audit to inspect for air leaks in your roof or at the very least check for loose shingles that could allow moisture to invade your home. Both of these can help prevent icicles and ice dams which can cause water to backup into your home.

Another step to prepare for the winter is to caulk around the exterior of your windows and doors. And don’t forget to unhook all hoses and drain your outdoor faucets. Do a walk around of the exterior and cover any vents or openings to prevent critters from joining you inside to stay warm.

Finally, if you have not done so yet drain the fuel from all gas operated equipment, lawn movers, chain saws, leaf blowers and hedge trimmers. And don’t forget to dump all of the soil from outdoor gardening containers to prevent freezing and cracking.

Now your home should be ready for winter,  go enjoy a cup of coco in front of the fire.
