Camp Korelitz
More than 20,000 children are diagnosed each year with type 1 diabetes, a life-changing disease that requires 24/7 monitoring for the rest of their lives. 2018 was another successful year of ADA Camp Korelitz in Clarksville, Ohio. 140 Campers and 20 Counselors in Training (CITs) participated in the camp between July 29 and August 4, 2018. 29.5% of families receive financial assistance to attend, while all campers paying for camp receive the benefit of financial support via the reduction of camp fees that funding from foundations helps provide.
Campers participated in traditional camp activities, like swimming, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, archery, ropes courses, sing-alongs, campfires, and arts & crafts. But beyond these usual camp experiences, these youth and teens had the opportunity to meet others living with diabetes, build friendships, and realize that they’re not alone in their diabetes. They also gained valuable hands-on experience in improving their diabetes management skills, which will help set them up for long-term health and success in managing this disease 24/7.
Outcomes include:
• After camp, 97% of campers expressed confidence interacting with their peers, and 98% reported confidence in ability to manage their diabetes.
• The total % of youth who are often or always able to solve diabetes management problems without assistance significantly increased to 64.9%.
• The total % of youth who were able to independently perform at least one diabetes management skill (i.e., checking blood glucose, correctly counting carbs, dosing appropriately, administering insulin, rotating injection/pump site) significantly increased to 98.2%.
• 100% of children learned that they are not limited by diabetes through camp activities.
• 100% of campers experienced individualized dietary instruction 4-5 times per day
