Preventing Housing Poverty for NKY Children
Grant Application:
Preventing Housing Poverty for NKY Children is dedicated to keeping children in their homes and their utilities connected. The program accomplishes this through Vincentian volunteer home visits where the Vincentians assess the extent of a family’s need. In addition to providing rent and utility assistance, families receive food and vouchers to our thrift stores for clothing, housewares ad furniture if warranted. Referrals are made to other agencies if the family needs assistance outside of our scope of services. Stable housing ensures that children will remain connected to their friends and neighbors, continue their schooling without interruption and maintain physical and emotional health. We expect to serve 360 children.
Grant Evaluation Report:
The fact that at least 326 children did not become homeless as the result of this grant makes the program successful. Not achieving the goal of 360 is concerning. Of the 787 clients served, the 326 children served seems low. Data error entries into our new client management system by our volunteers could account for the discrepancy, as 95 households did not indicate the presence of children. Training for the system is ongoing to prevent future errors.
Results:
326 children remained safely in their homes. FY 2021-22 was the first full year that our Vincentian volunteers used the client management system to track the demographics of clients. As a result, we had to estimate how many children would be counted in this program. Of the total number of 787 assisted, the number of children was 326, which is below the 360 estimated. While our estimation may have been high, our volunteers (many of whom are retired) have difficulty with the technology and for 95 households the comments did not indicate the number of children. We expect that not all children were counted due to data entry errors.
