Beyond the Classroom

Beech Acres Parenting Center proposes to continue and expand its Beyond the Classroom (BtC) program in nine schools for the 2022-2023 school year: Dater Montessori, DePaul Christo Rey, and seven Catholic Inner-city Schools Education (CISE) schools.

The comprehensive, no-cost services offered through BtC enhance readiness to learn through trauma-informed care for children’s behavioral, emotional, and mental health. Embedded within schools, and carried out collaboratively with teachers and school staff, BtC addresses students’ individual needs while also providing supportive services to families. Because more than 70% of those served are from communities facing deep educational and economic inequities, BtC also coordinates services between families, schools, and community partners with resources for basic needs. This helps alleviate common barriers to a child’s academic success, helps families to create safe, stable environments, and ensures families have the resiliency and support needed for their children to thrive.

Program Goals:

In 2022-2023, BtC projects impacting 2,703 individuals from nine schools throughout Greater Cincinnati (Dater Montessori, DePaul Christo Rey, and seven CISE schools).

Specifically ...
BAPC will impact?797?individuals at Dater Montessori in the following categories:
90?students in Mental Health services
25?persons served by Family Peer Support
90?persons served through crisis coordination and support

?

Program Results:

During the 2022-2023 academic year, the Charles H. Dater Foundation emerged as a pivotal catalyst behind the remarkable achievements of the BtC program. This invaluable support facilitated the substantial growth of BtC services across seven distinguished CISE schools: St. Boniface, St. Clement, St. Joseph School, St. Lawrence, St. William, Romero Academy, and Holy Family. Begun in five schools during the 2018-2019 academic term, the program's expansion has been nothing short of extraordinary, encompassing an impressive ascent to encompass 29 schools within a mere span of five years. The unwavering commitment of the Charles H. Dater Foundation, exemplified through its generous investments, has been instrumental in propelling the BtC initiative to transcend boundaries and impact our vibrant Greater Cincinnati community with resounding positivity, year after year.

Amidst a year characterized by unprecedented levels of stress, uncertainty, and numerous challenges including continued social crises, economic turbulence, and more, your invaluable support enabled Beech Acres to extend crucial behavioral and mental health assistance to families and students. From July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, 1,650 individuals from Dater Montessori, DePaul Christo Rey, and seven CISE schools have been positively impacted by the Beyond the Classroom program, including:

384 students in Mental Health services

65 persons served by Family Peer Support

500 persons served through crisis coordination and support

701 persons served through parent assessments

BtC staff are seeing that students in schools are struggling more, and there are higher numbers of children with behavioral health issues. However:

56% of all students receiving mental health services saw significant improvements in the severity of their mental health problems and/or their ability to manage the many tasks of daily life (national benchmarks average approximately 35-40%) exceeding our goal of 50%.

67% of students receiving mental health services who are critically impaired in the severity of their mental health problems and/or ability to manage the many tasks of daily life saw meaningful improvement in these areas, just shy of our goal of 70%

84% of families receiving services increased their self-sufficiency, significantly exceeding our goal of 60%.

Currently, BtC staff are seeing both a strong increase in the amount of student need for crisis support and the intensity of these needs. To address this issue, BAPC has increased its focus on crisis support and school coordination to help support these students’ coping skills, de-escalation abilities, resiliency, and social-emotional competencies. Additionally, the Family Engagement Coordinator embedded within schools connected families to resources for basic needs, alleviating common barriers to a child’s academic success. Direct service partners in the 2022-2023 academic year included: Freestore Foodbank; St. Vincent De Paul; Community Action Agency; Hamilton County Job and Family Services; Churches Active in Northside (CAIN); New Leaf Kitchen; Greater Cincinnati Assistance League; St. Vincent De Paul; Jack’s Closet; Neediest Kids of All; Crossroads Church Clifton; Wish Tree; the University of Cincinnati; City Link; Woodlands Elite Cheer Gym; and many more.

Since this program deals with long-term treatment, outcomes related to long-term growth and success may not be apparent for many years. However, studies show that children engaged in programs like BtC (based on several best practices) show decreased rates of drug abuse or homelessness and increased rates of high school graduation, mental and physical health, and overall self-sufficiency. The following stories and feedback demonstrate how BtC ensured children had the immediate support they needed in the 2022-2023 academic year:
