CET's PBS KIDS: Engaging Our Youngest Viewers On-Air, Online, and In The Classroom

A recent study confirms that parents overwhelmingly agree no other media brand meets their children’s school readiness needs like PBS KIDS. The study also found that nine in 10 parents are likely to use PBS KIDS resources for school preparedness and three-quarters say their child exhibits more positive behavior after engaging with PBS Parents — especially those in low-income homes — rank PBS KIDS as the most trusted and safe place for children to watch television.

Over 80% of Cincinnati children ages 2-8, and their caregivers, tune in to and trust the 70 hours of weekly children's programming on CET. Each year, new children's programming is developed for PBS stations to purchase and use to educate their youngest viewers. As with all programming, it is tested with PBS to ensure that viewers learn through embedded elements on-air and online.

Program Goals:

CET airs over 40 hours of award-winning, children's programming per week on our main channel and also airs 1680 additional hours of programming on our PBS KIDS 24/7 Channel to more than 2.3 million residents in the tri-state region. PBS helps children learn reading, math, and essential skills. National PBS research shows that the majority of viewers are women of the household who are 18- to 49-years-old with children under three and households with two- to eight-year-old children from all socioeconomic status groups. These individuals are our target audience for viewership and for participation in educational, outcome-based "games" on CETconnect.org and PBSKids.org.

Program Results:

CET's PBS KIDS 24/7 channel continues to hold a top 10 spot (often 1 - 3) of ALL PBS sub channels (331 of them!) for the past several months. Trac Media, a vendor that surveys viewers, is beyond surprised at these results. When asked, "why is Cincinnati off the charts?"

The reply is simple. Because we are the Queen City where our youngest viewers want and appreciate educational TV. Afterall, it is by no coincidence that CET is the nation's first licensed TV station for non-commercial, educational programming.

We also have extremely generous and loyal donors, including The Charles H. Dater Foundation, who enable us to broadcast these Emmy award-winning shows. These are just two of the many reasons why CET has the first license in the nation for public TV.
