Improving Lives through Equine Assisted Services 2023
CTRH requests grant support for its equine-assisted services (EAS, formally equine-assisted activities and therapies) in their existing forms. Through EAS, we use horses to help promote mental wellness, emotional growth and physical improvements. Our therapies and programs include: 1) Adaptive recreational riding for children and adults with varying types of disabilities 2) Hippotherapy, through which occupational and physical therapists use equine movement as a therapy tool to engage sensory, neuromotor, and cognitive systems to promote functional outcomes; 3) Family fun with horses; 4) Miniature horse outreach, including visits for hospice patients; 5) Mini-workshops for social and emotional enrichment; and 6) Special Olympics equestrian games (state and USA games). Program fees comprise only a small portion of our revenue, so we depend on the community to sustain these services for Greater Cincinnati residents.
Program Goals:
Through our equine-assisted services, we use horses to help promote mental wellness, emotional growth, and physical improvements.
Program Results:
In 2023, we served 78 hippotherapy clients, 165 in adaptive recreational riding, 61 children in Reading to Horses, 6 through Special Olympics Equestrian Games, and approximately 5,000 through our outreach activities.
In Hippotherapy, we use the Canadian Outcome Performance Measure (COPM), an evidence-based outcome measure looking at clients’ perceptions of how they are doing with everyday living. Our goal is for each client to have a 2.0 COPM increase or greater. Actual results ranged from 0 – 7.5 during our most recent reporting period.
In our Adaptive Recreational Riding Program, success is defined as 80% of participants/caregivers expressing satisfaction with improvements they have made. In our most recent surveys, 100% expressed satisfaction and 93% said they would participate again.
In our Miniature Horse Therapy Outreach Program, our target was 25 visits. We completed 49 visits in 2023 to schools, hospice programs, retirement/nursing homes, and more.
We had 6 riders participate in the Special Olympics equestrian games.
It should also be noted that our previous Executive Director, Beth Compton, retired at the end of 2023. Our new Executive Director is Jenny Evans. She had been the Program Director at CTRH and is a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor. She previously worked in human resources and talent development roles in the nonprofit and business sectors.
