Nutrition Program for Children and Mothers Experiencing Homelessness
The nutrition program at Lydia's House addresses the critical need for nutritious foods for children and their mothers coming out of homelessness. Lydia's House serves 6-12 individuals at a time, or 35-48 individuals each year. Of these, 2/3 will be children and 60% of adult women will be pregnant. The impact of this program will mean improvements in children’s physical health and development as they and their mothers recover from a time of crisis while eating together at a nurturing family dinner table setting in a supportive community. Because of funding from the Dater Foundation, Lydia’s House can provide quality food, and nutrition education for 32 children and their mothers in 2023.

The nutrition program at Lydia's House addresses the critical need for nutritious foods for children and their mothers coming out of homelessness. Five nights a week between 7-15 people gather around the Lydia’s House table for a nutritious meal, including homeless women and children, volunteers and former guests and their children. Lydia’s House also offers food supplements, above what women can buy with food stamps, for lunch and breakfast. With the support of Children's Hospital and an on-site case manager, Lydia’s House offers regular sessions on healthy eating, portions and children's nutritional needs. The refrigerator includes a healthy snack drawer and the pantry a healthy snack shelf. The way we eat together in community is just as important as the food itself. Healthy eating patterns are modeled by supportive staff and volunteers. Children and their mothers are nurtured emotionally and spiritually by eating together in a safe, supportive community.
