KLASS: Keep Learning After School StopsKeep
KLASS (Keep Learning After School Stops) is a free, high-energy after-school program for PreK-6th grade students, designed to empower children in Over-the-Rhine to succeed at school and beyond. KLASS provides tutoring, homework help, healthy snacks, exercise, social enrichment, arts, and Bible lessons five days a week for children in a high-crime area of Cincinnati. WCMC is a safe place for all children to feel safe, loved, and included while receiving academic support and learning important life skills.
Program Goals:
The objective of KLASS (Keep Learning After School Stops) is to provide after-school programming for children in grades PreK-6 in the neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine in Cincinnati, OH. Our goal is to provide a safe, nurturing place for students to meet their physical, academic, emotional, and spiritual needs. We guide students to succeed at school and beyond by offering homework help, academic support, enrichment activities, Christian education, and a daily balanced snack. We utilize the Developmental Asset Profile to asses our students’ needs and structure our programs accordingly. We also provide extra-curricular activities, community events, and discovery trips throughout the year.
Program Results:
We met our goal of providing after-school programming for pre-k-6th graders every day that Cincinnati Public Schools were in session. We provided a balanced snack for every child in our care, and we maintained a safe and nurturing environment. We had a total of 186 students (PreK-6) registered for KLASS, and we served an average of 64 students per day. We made reading a top priority and made sure kids were reading every day in our program. We used DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) Assessments to track our students' academic progress throughout the year. Among students who completed DIBELS assessments at least twice during the school year,
75% (18/24) of kindergarten through first graders showed improvement in letter naming fluency.
87% (41/47) of first through sixth graders showed improvement in oral reading fluency.
83% (30/36) of second through sixth graders showed improvement in reading comprehension (Maze).
