iSPACE STEM Programs for Underserved Students
This request for the “150 Classes” Project is to enable iSPACE to provide subsidies to schools/organizations that would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience high-quality, engaging, and effective STEM programs. Any school in the Greater Cincinnati region where approximately 50% or more of its students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program will be eligible.
Program Goals:
One major aspect that sets iSPACE apart from other STEM providers is that while other informal providers may offer enrichment and even integration, iSPACE offers immersion. We are committed to helping students succeed in school by making learning exciting and by allowing students to DO science, DO technology, DO engineering and DO math, not simply read, hear about it, watch someone else do it, or just walk past it. This approach focuses on developing self-efficacy in students and their educators. We build sustainability into our programs by integrating professional development for educators through workshops and modeling so they feel confident to continue the teaching strategies once iSPACE steps away. Many educators do not have the opportunity to offer such programs to their students. A gift from the Dater Foundation can make this possible for them and the students they teach. Classroom teachers could choose to have iSPACE come to their school or bring their students to iSPACE. Lessons incorporate literacy and 21st-century skills (collaboration, creativity, critical thinking…), the application of scientific inquiry, science process skills (observation, communication, classification, inference, measurement, prediction…), engineering design, and more, depending on the program. All programs are aligned with state academic standards.
