PWC VIP Student Service Program
Program Goals:
The goal of PWC’s Student Service Program, a component of PWC's Volunteer Involvement Program (VIP), is to engage youth in important and meaningful volunteer experiences that benefit both the students and low-income residents of Greater Cincinnati. During the 2023 program, we anticipate that approximately 300 youth volunteers will participate in our summer student services program. We expect that these students together with young participants in group projects and PWC’s two major volunteer events, Prepare Affair and Repair Affair, will provide 3800+ hours of service providing important home repair and yard maintenance services for low-income households across Greater Cincinnati. This program helps low-income homeowners stay safe, independent, and healthy in their own homes, and it helps students build technical and interpersonal skills, form significant relationships, gain exposure to realities of urban and rural poverty, and most importantly, develop a commitment to service that will shape their lives for years to come.
Program Results:
During our Summer Student Service Program 236 young people from Cincinnati and across the nation donated over 3400 hours of volunteer service to low-income households in Greater Cincinnati. They repaired and rebuilt deteriorated porches and replaced crumbling sidewalks and walkways to provide safe entry and exit from homes. They cleared out severely overgrown yards to create usable outdoor space, improve visibility around the home, and reduce the presence of conditions attractive to rodents, insects, and other pests that can damage a home. They painted homes and stained decks to prevent water damage. One group hung gutters. Another rebuilt a retaining wall that had collapsed.
We also had a strong representation of student groups from local schools and churches throughout the year, with another 25-30 student volunteers participating in group projects, with an estimated donation of 150-200 hours of their time and hard work.
It is difficult to calculate the precise number of young volunteers who participated in Prepare Affair as group leaders do not always include youth volunteers on their forms, but we know that there were at least 40-50 youth volunteers who participated in this event, with an estimated total of 120-150 hours of volunteer time.
