Girl Scout Leadership Experience: Girl Scouts for Every Girl Initiative
GSWO is requesting a $50,000 grant from the Charles H. Dater Foundation to support a new program expansion - the Girl Scouts for Every Girl Initiative. Our direct delivery program (previously referred to as community outreach) engages more than 2,500 underserved girls in the Greater Cincinnati region each year. GSWO has historically reached girls through in-school and afterschool programs in Title-1 schools, community partner locations, staff-led Girl Scout troops, virtual programs, and Girl Scout overnight camps, all provided at no cost.To ensure that every girl receives a fully robust Girl Scout experience, we are expanding this program with multiple offerings, including staff-led troops, programs provided at no cost and complete with transportation, and year-round Girl Scout engagement.
As a result of their participation, girls in grades K-12 will improve their academic success, gain critical interpersonal and social skills, and become girl leaders who will give back to their communities.
Program Goals:
The goal of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience is to encourage girls to discover themselves and their passions, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better place. To achieve this goal, the following objectives have been set:
1. GSWO will engage at least 2,500 girls in direct service programming. Of those girls, 500 will be engaged in our Girl Scouts for Every Girl extension.
2. GSWO will partner with at least 50 schools and community partner agencies to offer the direct service program.
3. GSWO will successfully collaborate with all schools and community agencies to offer Girl Scouting to underserved southwest Ohio girls, with an expectation of developing partnerships that will continue beyond 2022-2023.
In measuring the impact of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, GSWO measures girls' progress toward five Girl Scout leadership outcomes which are designed to promote girls’ social and mental development, academic achievement, leadership skills, happiness, and overall well-being. GSWO has set the following program outcome goals for this year:
• 70% of girls will demonstrate a strong sense of self. They will have confidence in themselves and their abilities. They will form positive identities.
• 48% of girls will demonstrate challenge-seeking behaviors. They will learn to take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from their mistakes.
• 51% of girls will develop healthy relationships. They will learn how to resolve conflicts constructively and communicate their feelings directly.
Program Results:
At Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, we survey our direct service and program event participants in person to gauge their development of leadership outcomes including a strong sense of self, challenge-seeking behaviors, and healthy relationships.
a. 72% of girls are seeking challenges in the world. They are taking safe risks and trying new things even if they might fail. They are learning from their mistakes and how to overcome obstacles.
b. 78% of girls demonstrate a strong sense of self. They not only have confidence in themselves and their abilities but are forming positive identities.
c. 66% of girls have developed healthy relationships. Girls develop and maintain healthy relationships by communicating their feelings directly and resolving conflicts constructively.
