Whiz Kids Tutoring and Mentoring

When no grant application was received by June 2023, the Foundation made a "renewal grant" for the program for which funding had been provided in the previous year.  For more information about the program, see the Grants Section of the 2021-22 Dater Foundation Annual Report on this web site and/or go to the grantee organization's web site.

Program Results:

No formal Grant Evaluation Report was submitted with results for the program.  This "Success Narrative" was submitted in December 2023.

Whiz Kids appreciates the generous grant from the Charles H. Dater Foundation! Funds are helping to provide tutoring and mentoring to low-income children who are struggling academically. Purchases include books, curriculum materials, school supplies, staffing, and volunteer background checks.

Whiz Kids is a literacy based, one-to-one tutoring and mentoring program for children ages 6-14. The program serves children from low-income families because they are most likely to enter kindergarten without the early literacy skills necessary for success. 98% of program participants are from families with incomes at or below the poverty level and 10% are homeless. 35% of program participants are also developmentally, mentally and/or physically disabled.

As of December 2023, Whiz Kids is operating 25 tutoring sites across Greater Cincinnati, serving over 350 children. These numbers will continue to grow later in the school year because a few sites are scheduled to open in January and February of 2024.

Whiz Kids is offered all over Greater Cincinnati, including many suburban neighborhoods. This year, we started an effort to get back into more inner-city, low-income neighborhoods and successfully brought Whiz Kids back to John P. Parker School in Madisonville. In January, we will also open in Avondale at Rockdale Elementary School. (Whiz Kids had not been offered in these schools for the last several years and is excited to reconnect to these communities.)

As we write this in mid-December, our Mobile Christmas Shop is wrapping up for the season with 12 Whiz Kids sites participating. Some of the families of students we serve cannot afford to provide gifts for their children at Christmas. Our mobile Christmas Shop aims to help provide gifts and spread the joy of the holiday season. Each participating student receives a toy of their choice, two gifts to give to other children in their family, socks, a hat, and gloves. All toys and winter gear are donated by supporters in the community. The program has grown each year and has seen great success.

Thank you again for the generous grant from the Dater Foundation that helps to make Whiz Kids possible. It’s changing the lives of children in our community by not only improving literacy and grades, but also by giving them the support and guidance of a trusted mentor to walk through life’s challenges with them.
