The Transition Age ENGAGE program addresses the two major needs of the transition age youth with disabilities: social interaction and life skills training. While in school, youth with disabilities interact with classmates and school staff, they may attend school activities and field trips, and they attend classes to help prepare them for life after high school. But when they leave high school, they are faced with a significant decline in services and engagement -- something frequently described as "falling off the cliff". Youth can become isolated, impacting their mental and emotional well-being which can in turn impact their physical health; and it can become increasingly difficult to help them develop the skills for community-based employment and living options. The Ken Anderson Alliance Transition Age ENGAGE program facilitates small group community-based social activities to help youth with disabilities aged 18-21 connect with peers and also interact with adults in the larger community; further, KAA's specially trained staff utilize outings to help participants increase their social and life skills (personal interactions, teamwork, money handling, following directions, problem solving, etc.) Program evaluations document the following among program participants: opportunity to participate in challenging and interesting activities increased from 49% to 71%, participation in the greater community increased from 33% to 71%, among other outcomes.
