Dater Foundation grants have supported Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s Education Outreach program since 2008.  A grant of $30,000 was made last September.  More than 40,000 students at 200 schools benefited in 2016-17 and the goal in 2017-18 is to reach 75,000 at 350 schools.

One component of the outreach is the Shakespeare-intensive Groundings Program for high school students ages 15-18.  About 25 participants meet at CSC on Saturday mornings throughout the school year.  As they learn about Shakespeare, they also build friendships within the ensemble.  One mother wrote to say how much the program meant to her son, who plans to study molecular biology in college and pursue a medical degree.

“We want you to know how grateful we are for all you do at the Groundlings program.  More people need to know about this gem of the Queen City. The special 'rituals' of this group -- the acceptance, the group hug, the compassion and empathy these kids share with one another --- and the guidance the leaders provide make it special.

“For our family, the program has been a huge blessing. Our son has loved every minute of each experience he has with you all.  As his parents, we feel blessed you are there and provide a place for him to express himself and be successful and accepted.  Thank you so very much!!!  Continue your great work.  Your Board members need to hear this!  Your financial supporters need to know that not only do you provide the city a Shakespeare connection, you also provide a place where students can learn, to grow, to express.  Again, thank you. You do great work. Know that you are making a huge difference to many young people in the city.”
