The Charles H. Dater Foundation celebrated Beth Broomall’s 30th anniversary as Grants Coordinator by giving her the opportunity to make a $30,000 grant to the nonprofit organization of her choice, and Beth chose the Literacy Network of Greater Cincinnati.

Beth presented the surprise check to Literacy Network President Michelle Guenther and Vice President Kim McDermott.  As she presented the check for the organization’s Children’s Basic Reading Program, Beth shared her personal story of working in her childhood years to overcome dyslexia and eventually take her place in education’s mainstream.  She credited techniques used by two pioneering educators, Charles L. Shedd, Ph.D., Head of the Psychology Department at Western Kentucky State College in Bowling Green, Kentucky and Dr. Caleb Gattegno, founder of Educational Solutions in New York, as well as her own school’s willingness to make the program available.

Beth grew up in Reading, Ohio.  She attended Reading Central Elementary School, Reading Middle School and Reading High School.  She attended Eastern Kentucky University.  She and her husband Ken live in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky.  They have two adult children.

Michelle Guenther and Kim McDermott took Beth and Foundation directors Bruce Krone and Roger Ruhl on a tour of the Literacy Network’s new facility in Queensgate.

Michelle sent these words in a follow-up email:

What a memorable morning!

Our entire team is honored to be selected by Beth to receive this very special grant in recognition of her 30 years of service to the Dater Foundation!

We promise to be responsible stewards for the gift you have entrusted with us and to utilize these funds in the spirit that they were given so that more children like Beth will feel empowered to become strong readers and compassionate adults like her!

Beth, thank you for sharing your story with us. It was wonderful to meet all of you in person. Each of you and the Dater Foundation have done so much good for our community and we are truly humbled by this honor.  Wishing you a holiday season filled with all the joy you bring to others.
